PUBLIC SPACE sparkassenplatz

Starting from a concrete desert and almost non-existent space for social interaction, we are striving for a design that not only incorporates the needs of all generations but also focuses on the sustainability factor.

The problem with Sparkassenplatz at the moment is that heat builds up and the atmosphere does not encourage people to linger. The quality of the square is to be enhanced by a flowing "little stream". Water is an element that radiates calm and relaxation. The movement of the stream also addresses the problem of heat. The "bank" invites people to sit down and cool their feet on hot days. While the parents drink a café, the children can play in the shallow water.

The water also has a purely practical use. It is used to water the greenery and thus protect it from drying out.

But water alone will not solve the heat congestion. The asphalt stores the heat and is therefore the main cause. It also seals the soil, preventing it from restoring the natural water cycle.

With permeable paving made of recycled concrete, it is possible to revive this original water cycle. The surrounding plants also benefit.

As for shading, the "little trees" are supposed to be the answer. Artificial trees with different uses can provide shade on the one hand, but also store rainwater and generate energy through photovoltaics for e-bike charging stations on the other. Green roofs help to combat heat and hanging plants create an atmospheric play of shadows and additional shade.

Energy can be generated by photovoltaics on the facades and used for light sources and e-bike stations on site.

Connection to public transport is a few minutes' walk away and bicycle racks are available at the edge of the square.
