URBAN LAVERIE cooling island

The atmosphere in the laundry park must once have been wonderful.

A light breeze touching the wet laundry. Cool and refreshing in summer.

A place of social gathering. Children playing.

The feeling of half shade on the skin.

Inspired by the strange and abandoned Laundry park of the Ahornhof (Innsbruck) the main goal was to create a similar atmosphere at the Landestheater Platz in Innsbruck. Taking the atmosphere of the laundry park into the urban context.

LAUNDRY - A TRANSLUCENT CURTAIN

Create privacy within public

PROBLEM

The Landestheaterplatz in Innsbruck is extremely hot in summer. This is why the main goal is to decrease the local temperature and gain more atmospheric space.

SOLUTION

The textiles are touching the river streaming around the structure. Water will move up the cloth and moisten it. When the wind blows through the curtains, the air behind the curtain will be perceived as cooler. Additionally, it will provide shade.

The moist clothes touching the water on the ground keep the area inside the urban laverie fresh and cool. A breeze can play with the texture of the garments and people can sit inside or around the court.

The place across the theater creates a sort of second theater.

The floor is covered with cobblestones. Depending on where the „path“ leads, the area between the stones will widen so a visual path is created.
